In a recent social media update, former WWE star Matt Cardona outlined his belief that for the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) to thrive, he must become the face of the company.
Known for his success on the independent wrestling scene, Cardona secured the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship in 2022 but had to relinquish the title in June of the same year due to injury.
Now on the comeback trail, Cardona is set to face off against EC3 for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship in the Ultimate Match of Death at NWA Paranoia on January 13.
In a pre-match preview shared on January 10, Cardona reiterated his claim as the real Worlds Champion and stressed the importance of the impending Deathmatch. He declared, “I never lost, and this is my chance to finally get it back in a Deathmatch, and I’m the Deathmatch King. EC3 calls himself the Overman, well, I’m the Indy God, and I need to walk out as champ. Not just for me.”
Stating that his victory is not just for personal glory but also for the betterment of NWA, Cardona explained, “Of course, I want to be a two-time champ. But for Billy, for everybody in the back, for all the fans, and also EC3, for you. I need to beat you for you because quite frankly you need a place to work.”
He emphatically declared, “The only way that is going to happen is if I’m the face of the company.”
While acknowledging EC3’s achievements as champion, Cardona made it clear that it was time for the “real Overman” to take charge. He pledged to do whatever it takes for NWA not just to survive but to thrive.
Directly addressing EC3, Cardona commended his opponent’s growth but asserted that it was now his turn to reclaim the title of Deathmatch King. He concluded, “This Saturday, I don’t care what weapons you bring. It doesn’t matter what you bring, bro. I’m the Deathmatch King. I beat Nick Gage. I beat the former king of the Deathmatch. There is no way I’m losing my throne and losing my crown to you, pal.”
