The WWE’s Treatment of The Rock’s Language Reignites Debate Over McMahon-Era Double Standards

The WWE finds itself under scrutiny once again, this time over the handling of The Rock’s recent use of adult language during his television appearances, sparking accusations of double standards reminiscent of the McMahon era.

While The Rock seemingly has the liberty to use explicit language, other wrestlers on the roster do not enjoy the same privilege.

In a recent issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer weighs in on the matter, stating:

“Given his position on the Board of Directors and his team’s protective shield, The Rock operates with relative impunity, shielded from the same level of scrutiny faced by his peers.”

Despite expectations that McMahon’s era of favoritism had ended, The Rock’s actions suggest otherwise, according to insiders.

Reports have emerged indicating discomfort among certain individuals regarding The Rock’s profanity usage. The Rock himself has acknowledged pushback from networks and standards & practices regarding his language.

FOX, the broadcaster for SmackDown, reportedly receives advance scripts of The Rock’s segments to facilitate censorship during broadcasts.

A significant portion of The Rock’s explicit language has been aimed at Cody Rhodes, prompting a response from Rhodes during a recent WWE Raw episode.

Claims have also arisen regarding The Rock’s segment on SmackDown, with allegations that it exceeded its allotted time, leading to cuts in other parts of the show. However, Brian Gewirtz, The Rock’s writer in WWE creative, has refuted these claims, with the Observer confirming that the segment proceeded as planned.
